Hope you can join us for this year’s Easter-Egg Hunt WOD. Everyone who participated last year had a blast, and we’re hoping for the same this year. It’s a family-friendly event, with candy, fun, and prizes to be had. After it’s all over, everyone can stick around to enjoy some bagels and coffee together. We’re asking for $5 per individual and $10 per family of two or more; the fee will help us get some tasty candy, great prizes, and the bagel breakfast to follow. Please be sure to sign up as soon as possible so we know how much to get. Thanks!

CrossFit Undies! We’re hosting a Charity WOD on April 18th at 9am. This is a donation only WOD for Michelle Wilkins. Michelle Wilkins and her unborn baby girl were attacked by a deranged woman pretending to sell baby clothes on Craig’s List in Longmont, Colorado. Tragically, the baby died after being cut from her mother’s womb and Michelle just emergered from 4 days in the ICU. Michelle is facing a long recovery — physically, emotionally, and financially. She would greatly love and appreciate anything anyone could offer in the way of support. She had just started a job teaching pottery classes after moving to Colorado. Costs for her recovery will be astronomical, so we ask you please to help if you can. Let me know if you have any questions!

Congratulations to everyone who has completed 15.1, 15.1a and 15.2 in the CrossFit Open! As I’m sure you’ve realized by now, the Open can be challenging and intimidating for seasoned CrossFit competitors, and downright terrifying if it’s your first time in a competitive CrossFit atmosphere. I wanted to take a minute and outline what I think is important about the Open, and why I’m so proud and excited that we’ve got such great participation this year. 1. For starters, the Open is a huge community event – not just within CFU, but worldwide. It’s the March Madness of CrossFit, and it can be fun to be part of a global phenomenon like this. 2. For many athletes, the Open is the first competition they enter. It allows them to dip their toes in the water without having to leave the comfort of their home box and decide if competitive CrossFit is something they’d like to continue. 3. Probably the most important thing the Open does is push every athlete outside of their comfort zone. The workouts are designed to encourage athletes across all divisions to go further than they’ve gone before, and I think we’ve seen the positive results over the last couple of weeks – we’ve seen athletes log their first Toes-to-bar, PR their Clean & Jerk after completing a grueling AMRAP, hit their first pull up or Chest-to-bar pull up and PR their overhead squats. On the other hand, even your coaches here have had the experience of being no-repped repeatedly during an Open workout, or heard “3-2-1 GO!” knowing that they weren’t going to be capable of a certain specified movement. It’s part of the give and take inherent to pushing the envelope. 4. The Open establishes a benchmark that you can reference year over year. It will give you a list of priorities to work on (like a cheat sheet for S.M.A.R.T. goals!), and give you a list of workouts to repeat when you feel ready. Athletes who are have a few Opens under their belt remember where they place each year and how they score on each workout. It gives you a target to chase for the next year after you’ve spent hundreds of hours working on double unders, snatches, pull ups, etc. All of this combines to offer an environment that can alternate between fun and stressful. All we can ask of anyone is that they put forth their best effort in each event. Do the best you can do, and don’t worry about how others perform. Your strengths will be someone else’s weaknesses, and vice versa. Encourage your friends when they struggle, and they’ll do the same for you. Embrace the spirit of the event, and don’t sweat the small stuff! If you are concerned about an aspect of an upcoming workout, don’t hesitate to speak to any of the CFU coaches who will gladly help you prepare. At the end of the day, the only thing you should judge yourself on is whether or not you feel you did the best you could… and make a mental note to work on xyz in preparation for 16.1! – CFU
